Position Overview
MacMore is seeking a FOIA Specialist to provide program, technical, and administrative support in processing Freedom of Information Act requests. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience managing FOIA submissions from intake through final response, with a strong knowledge of FOIA regulations, exemptions, and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and program support to the FOIA office.

  • Review and analyze FOIA requests and responsive records to determine appropriate handling.

  • Coordinate directly with other federal agencies for referrals and joint processing.

  • Process documents for release, including redaction using FOIA Xpress or similar tools.

  • Draft and prepare responses, release letters, and correspondence in compliance with FOIA guidelines.

  • Apply and cite FOIA exemption codes to withhold information as necessary.

  • Research and prepare responses to general and specific FOIA inquiries.

  • Manage fee determinations (charge, reduction, or waiver) for requests.

  • Ensure compliance with statutory deadlines and local FOIA processing requirements.

  • Prepare reports including backlog summaries, open case reports, and ad hoc reports.

  • Conduct legal research as needed to support FOIA determinations.

  • Provide customer assistance to individuals submitting FOIA requests.

  • Maintain proper handling of sensitive and confidential information in line with security protocols.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in FOIA-related roles or similar positions.

  • Experience processing FOIA requests, reviewing/redacting documents, and drafting responses.

  • Strong knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act, regulations, and exemptions.

  • Demonstrated ability to draft clear, accurate, and legally compliant FOIA correspondence.

  • Skilled in managing multiple requests and meeting deadlines with precision.

  • High attention to detail in reviewing and preparing documents for release.

  • Proven experience handling sensitive and confidential information responsibly.

  • Familiarity with FOIA Xpress or other redaction/FOIA management software preferred.
